A telomere test is a simple blood test that measures the length of your telomeres. Telomeres are protective “buffer” DNA structures found at the ends of our chromosomes. Every time cells divide and DNA is replicated, a small amount of genetic material is lost from the telomeres ends of chromosomes. Telomeres allow our cells to divide without dropping genes essential for life.
In this way, telomeres are prime indicators of aging. They have been compared to the aglets or plastic tips found at the ends of shoelaces or the wire nuts used to protect and hold spliced electrical wires together. The telomere test is designed to reveal a person’s biological age. For example, a 45 year old woman with short telomeres may be considered to have a biological age of 55. This means she is aging faster than normal, and her telomeres are the length of an average 55 year old.
Telomeres naturally become shorter as we get older, but external factors such as oxidative stress and an unhealthy lifestyle can increase this process. Shorter telomeres have been linked to cardiovascular disease, some cancers, osteoporosis, dementia, diabetes, and other chronic degenerative diseases of aging conditions.
The telomere length test is designed for anyone interested in optimal health, age management, and in knowing their telomere length as it relates to being within or outside the normal reference range for their chronological age.
