Prevent Disease with Travel & Domestic Immunizations

Picture this: you’re on a vacation overseas enjoying yourself when you notice a mosquito perching on your arm. You don’t think much of it as you swat the insect away. It isn’t until later that you notice you aren’t feeling so good. Clearly, you’re coming down with something, but you can’t tell what. Little do you know it at the time, but you’ve contracted yellow fever — a disease that could have been easily prevented by getting an immunization in advance.

If you’re thinking about going on a vacation soon, don’t forget to get immunized against foreign diseases. Getting an immunization before you go can ensure that you won’t have to worry about catching diseases that aren’t prominent in the U.S. At Essential Health & Wellness, we provide vaccines against several serious foreign pathogens:

  • Yellow Fever
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Typhoid Fever
  • Malaria

Any of these diseases are enough to ruin a vacation, and some can take a long time to subside. That’s why it’s so important to remember immunizations before you travel.

Don’t Let Immunization Be the Last Thing You Worry About

The best reason to get an immunization from a foreign disease is to ensure that your trip goes as smoothly as possible. When you catch a disease while traveling, it can severely impact any plans you may have had laid out. Foreign illnesses are often incredibly easy to catch in select locales. All the diseases outlined above are spread through unpredictable means — mainly by mosquito bite and or contaminated food and water. With factors that far out of your control, taking preventative measures is your only way of guaranteed safety.

We Offer Travel Immunizations to Everyone

If you want to get a travel immunization from Essential Health & Wellness, you don’t need to be a member of our 24/7 Healthcare Direct subscribers. In fact, anyone is welcome to come by to get immunized. We believe that when you don’t have to spend your vacation worrying about catching a disease, you’re able to have that much more fun.

Options for Domestic Immunizations

Even if you’re not traveling abroad, we’ve still got you covered for all of your immunization needs. When you choose Essential Health & Wellness, we provide you with options for:

  • Annual Influenza (Flu Shots)
  • Shingles Vaccine
  • Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
  • Pneumococcal Vaccine
  • Meningococcal Vaccine
  • Hepatitis A Vaccine
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine
  • Combination Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Series Vaccine

Staying immunized domestically is just as — if not more — important than staying immunized for travel. Nobody likes getting sick. Because of just how easy it is to come into contact with pathogens in your day-to-day life, you should make sure that you and your family stay protected. That gives you the peace of mind that no matter what situation you encounter, you won’t have to worry about getting sick.

Are You Finding It Difficult to Lose Weight?

It can be hard to lose weight and keep it off. You may need guidance, support, and a personalized weight loss program to help you reach your optimal body weight. However, there are a few steps you can take to begin losing weight.

Follow These Tips to Begin Your Weight Loss Journey

Eat less processed foods, or even stop eating them completely if you can. Processed foods are not good for you. They’re filled with tons of sodium, sugar, and unhealthy toxins. If you’re out shopping, look fresh foods, and avoid the aisles so you don’t get tempted to buy chips, cookies, and other processed snacks.

Sugar is your weight-loss enemy. It can be highly addictive, and it’s found in a lot of processed foods. Even foods like peanut butter or chicken broth can contain added sugar. Read the ingredients list on the packaging of any foods you’re thinking about buying, and keep an eye out for large amounts of added sugar.

You may eventually notice that any progress you’ve made on losing weight has slowed down. If this happens, make an effort to increase your metabolism. Drinking more water and staying hydrated is one way to do this. Sodium retains fluid and can make you feel bloated. When you’re hydrated, your body can remove excess sodium more easily.

Even though following this advice can help you shed a few extra pounds, you may need a more comprehensive approach to reach and maintain a healthy weight on a long-term basis.

Here’s How a Medical Weight Loss Regimen Can Help You Shed the Pounds and Keep Your Weight Down

What’s the Point of Stem Cell Banking?

Recently, science and medicine have been abuzz over the promise of real medical breakthroughs in stem cell research. If you have ever wondered why stem cell storage has become such a hot topic, this article will fill you in on the science and the possibilities.

Stem Cells Explained

A stem cell is a cell that can become another, more specific type of cell, such as a skin cell or a nerve cell. There are three types of human stem cells, and at Essential Health, we harvest and store the adult stem cell type. The name “adult” is a little misleading, as these stem cells are in everyone’s body — adults, children, and babies.

The role of adult stem cells is to replace cells as they wear out and to stimulate damaged organs to repair themselves. As you grow older, your stem cells slowly lose their ability to repair and maintain your tissues and organs. It’s thought that this loss of viability plays a role in the physical decline associated with aging.

Adult stem cells are present throughout your body, in your tissues and organs, as well as in umbilical cord blood and peripheral blood. We harvest two types of adult stem cells from bone marrow in your hip bone. We specialize in adult stem cells from bone marrow because research has shown them to be the most viable and potent types of stem cells for tissue regeneration. One type–mesenchymal–has powerful tissue-building properties. The other type–hematopoietic–is capable of regenerating your blood cells.

What Is Stem Cell Storage?

While you may want to use your stem cells for an immediate treatment, you can also store them for use at a later date. Stem cells are ideal for storage because they can survive for long periods of time, can divide to make additional stem cells, and can develop into specialized cell types. When you store your younger, healthier stem cells now, they are available to you in the future for regenerative therapies and treatments.

Why Bank My Stem Cells?

Stem cell storage’s purpose is to ensure that you have your own personal stem cells available should you need them for regenerative therapies that exist now or will be available in the future. Your own adult stem cells provide a natural repair mechanism for many tissues throughout your body, and they are a perfect genetic match, which should prevent immune rejection.

The field of regenerative medicine is burgeoning. Currently, standard medical practice uses adult stem cell transplants in the treatment of conditions such as multiple myeloma and leukemia. Plus, there are many more possibilities on the horizon. Researchers believe that adult stem cells will eventually be used to fully heal damaged tissues and organs.

The younger you are when you store your stem cells, the healthier they will be. Even if you aren’t 20, 30, or even 40 anymore, the sooner you bank your stem cells, the better. It’s good insurance, because you never know if your future self is going to need them.

When you ask yourself the question, “Why store my stem cells?”, your answer should be, “Why not?” The procedure is simple, fast, and relatively painless. Your younger stem cells may someday provide you with the best possible treatment for a chronic disease or age-related disability.

When Stress Takes Over

Everybody experiences stress, no matter their age, job, financial situation, or any other range of factors. Stress is a part of life. When you think about it, stress in itself is actually a good thing. It’s a sign. That sign is designed to alert you to action, so we need it to some extent. Stress motivates us, propels us to overcome challenges, and helps us reach new levels of understanding and capability. But, stress is meant to only go so far and no further. If it goes further, as in the case of someone who experiences too much stress or stress that is prolonged, then it becomes an inhibitor and even dangerous. Today, stress has taken on a new meaning. For our ancestors, stress was a necessary signal from the body, and it subsided after the stressor was removed. In our society now, stress has become the norm. It’s ever-present, and it feels to many like there’s no end in sight thanks to how often in our lives today we feel we’re on a wheel we can’t get off of.

When stress begins to become a problem, many people begin to experience health alerts like insomnia, fatigue, illness, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and more. However, we often don’t stop to readjust when these issues arise because they’ve become so common in our culture, we don’t see them as the red flags that they are. Left untreated, these issues will develop into more serious health problems over time, like heart conditions, serious diseases, adrenal and thyroid complications, etc., so the motivation to get to the bottom of them and change our lifestyles is definitely there, yet we’re not doing much to help ourselves.

If stress is showing you it’s getting out of control, take control and do something about it now, starting with these tips.

  • Starting making a list on Sunday nights of all the things you’re supposed to accomplish for the week. Then, ask yourself if all those things really need to be done. Maybe start by taking just one thing off the list and increase week by week. It’s likely nothing terrible will happen if you lighten your load a little. With more time to relax, your body and mind will have time to repair.
  • Carve out some alone time. Even just 10 minutes a day of time spent by yourself can do wonders. Slow down, get quiet, and refresh.
  • Spend time outdoors and with friends. When we get caught up in all the have-to’s, we forget about the joys of life. Get outside and connect with nature. Take a walk. Look at the sky. Remember that you yourself are a part of  nature. Also set aside time to enjoy your loved ones. Set obligations aside and have a real conversation or just relish quality time together.
  • Remember your hobbies and interests. Though life can sometimes feel like a never-ending to-do list, it’s up to you to make yourself and your own pleasure a priority. It’s important to stop and do the things you love to do here and there. What lit you up as a kid? Painting? Music? Hiking? Let yourself enjoy these things, even when you’re busy.
  • Learn to meditate. Meditation has become so trendy lately that it can seem like a passing fad, but it’s actually an ancient form of quieting the mind and connecting with ourselves. There really isn’t one right way to do it either. Just go somewhere quiet, close your eyes, and try not to concentrate on any one thing. Let your thoughts flow by. Focus on your breath. You’d be surprised how much healing happens when  you do this.
  • Exercise and eat a healthy diet. The foods you eat your drinks you consume play a big role in how your body responds to stress, as does exercise. Get your body moving, burn off negative energy, and nourish your body and mind with healthy, whole foods that give you energy and stabilize your mood.
  • Sleep more. Yes, this can be problematic if you’re stressed, but changing your routine can go a long way. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Put the phone away. Turn off the TV. Have some warm tea and put on your coziest pajamas. Having a soothing routine before bed will help train your mind that this is a time for relaxation and not running through to-do’s.

Your Thyroid & Your Health

While the thyroid does get some mention in the health world, it doesn’t get nearly enough attention for all the work that it does and how widely it impacts your health. The thyroid is a small gland located in your neck. It’s primary function is to regulate your metabolism. However, your thyroid affects many other aspects of your health when it gets out of balance. If it becomes to low or too high, you can expect to see it show up in your health in a variety of ways that you or your doctor may not trace to your thyroid right away. Proper thyroid function is significantly affected by your stress load, as well as your diet. You may be surprised to find out what this little gland can do to your body and your mind if it goes off the track, so it’s an important component of your health to be knowledgeable about and to work to improve if you and your doctor detect an imbalance in its functioning.

Low Thyroid Symptoms

  • Depression
  • Weight Gain
  • Constipation
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Brittle, Ridged Nails
  • Rough, Dry Skin
  • Menstrual Irregularities
  • Fluid Retention
  • Anxiety and Panic Attacks
  • Decreased Memory
  • Muscle and Joint Pain
  • Cold Hands or Feet
  • Decreased Sexual Interest
  • Insomnia Fatigue

Overactive Thyroid Symptoms

  • Heart Palpitations
  • Feeling Hot and Sweaty
  • Fine Tremors
  • Rapid Weight Loss
  • Nervousness
  • Clammy Skin

You may be thinking that many of these issues are common reactions to a number of health problems, and you’re right. That’s why it’s important to get to the bottom of your imbalance if you’re experiencing these signs and symptoms. At Essential Health and Wellness, we carefully analyze the thyroid when patients are experiencing these issues, using state-of-the-art lab testing to determine if your thyroid is not functioning optimally. If an imbalance is found, we work with you to optimize your hormone levels and partner with you to change your lifestyle and habits in health ways to sustain your thyroid health.
